very calm and large fly

Notes:

I was taking a break from hiking in Short Hills provincial park when this fly landed on me. Ignoring my instincts to shoo if off me, I thought I'd let it do its thing. It didn't bite me at all but sucked some of my sweet and fly off. One of its wings was half missing, so maybe that's why it was moving too much.

I think you're right Lauren, looks more like a syrphid fly. These are all the shots I have though.

Think this might be a Syrphid? Looks more Syrphid than Tachinid…..Do you have a picture that shows the wing venation?
