Tropical Orbweaver Spider

Eriophora ravilla

Description:

Large, hairy orbweaver spider with about 3 cm body length. It was very active because it was nighttime and had also captured what looks to be an Antllion adult and was enveloping it in silk (3rd picture). The markings on the abdomen were a beautiful pale green-white.

Habitat:

Heavy shrubbery along the highway between San Cristobal de Las Casas and Tuxtla Gutierrez, km 11.5, 865 meters.

This looks pretty close to an Eriophora sp. Family Araneidae.
