Picus viridis subsp. sharpei
It is a member of the woodpecker family (Picidae). It measures 30–36 cm in length with a 45–51 cm wingspan. Both sexes are green above and pale yellowish green below, with yellow rump and red crown and nape; the moustachial stripe has a red centre in the male but is solid black in the female.This guy belongs to the Iberian subspecies (sharpei) with lores and around the eye in grey instead of black. It is very shy and wary and it is more easily recognised by its loud calls, known as yaffling.
They like old deciduous trees for nesting close to areas rich in ants on which they feed. Open woodland, hedges and big city parks
