Mossy Moth

Description:

This moth, in addition to being camouflaged for hiding on moss, has a variety of different scale types on the thorax, head and abdomen which incredibly, mimic moss structures. Up close (second picture), these scales resemble moss more than moss itself! If you isolate these tufts (third picture), you can see the different types of scales and also see that many are even forked on the tips to help resemble plants.

Habitat:

Came to an ultraviolet light in the garden, San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.
