Amanita muscaria

Description:

Amanita muscaria var. muscaria, the typical red-and-white spotted variety. Fully grown, the bright red cap is usually around 8–20 cm (3–8 in) in diameter. After emerging from the ground, the cap is covered with numerous small white to yellow pyramid-shaped warts. Poissonous and hallucinogenic.

Habitat:

A. muscaria is a cosmopolitan mushroom, native to conifer and deciduous woodlands throughout the temperate and boreal regions of the Northern Hemisphere.

k.herman, that could certainly explain why they REALLY have the "deer-in-the-headlight" look! Hahha!
But this truly is a magical and mysterious mushroom, hope to see it up close one day. :)

I once read an interesting article about how the deer in the area eat these and hallucinate. I think they are beautiful and fascinating mushrooms.
