Rainbow lorikeet

Trichoglossus haematodus

Description:

This is a medium-sized parrot that grows to just short of one foot in height with an adult wingspan of less than seven inches. The lorikeet parrot is among the most colorful of birds.

Habitat:

The species ranges in the Australasian area: Australia; Indonesia; Papua New Guinea; New Caledonia, the Solomon Islands; and some other Pacific islands. Its habitat ranges from woodlands to coastal bush and rainforest.

Notes:

There were approximately twenty birds maintained in an aviary at Ardastra Gardens, Zoo, and Conservation Centre, in Nassau, Bahamas. At feeding time, a limited number of visitors were allowed into the aviary to hold small slices of apple. Numerous birds would fly and land on your forearm and hand in order to eat the fruit, while taking care not to eat the cover of the apple.
