Circus pygargus
A very uncommon winter visitor. Was not sure on the ID because of the confusion between Female Montagu's Harrier and Female Pallid Harrier so had got this one identified by the staff at the Sanctuary. A migratory bird of prey of the harrier family. Its common name commemorates the British naturalist George Montagu. Adult males are characterized by their overall pale grey plumage contrasting with black wingtips. Compared with other harriers this species has characteristic black bands along the secondaries, both above and below the wing and rusty streaks on belly and flanks. Adult females have a broadly similar plumage to that of Pallid and Hen Harriers. The underparts are mostly pale yellow-brown, the belly with longitudinal stripes and the wing coverts spotted. The upper parts are uniform dark brown except for the white upper tail coverts ("rump"), and the sightly paler central wing coverts. The diet consists mainly of small ground-living animals in areas of low or sparse vegetation. An important part is taken by small rodents, small birds and large insects. The Montagu's Harrier is a long distance migrant. Birds from Eurasia spend the winter in sub-Saharan Africa, while those from the eastern part of the range migrate to the Indian subcontinent.
Seen near the Little Rann of Kutch at the Wild Ass Sanctuary.
Description from Wikipedia. The shots were not very clear due to the distance.
Hi, nice bird. This is an imperial eagle. Check the strong bill, broad wings, broad black end to the tail, yellow nape and white patch on top of the back which are characteristic.
Thanks Sachin. Already uploaded wild ass some time back. Here: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/685...
Nice Spotting
It will our pleasure if you can also upload spotting of Ghudkhar, (wild ass of Kutch) as it is spotted over back side of this picture.
