Carcharodus alceae
Other Carcharodus Skippers look very similar so I could be mistaken. See Notes below. 3 are probably out of range and a 4th is principally montane so unlikely to be found on the coast.
Roadside verge.
There are 7 members of the Carcharodus Genus.
Carcharodus alceae, Mallow Skipper.
Carcharodus tripolinus, False Mallow Skipper, Out of range.
Carcharodus lavatherae, Marbled Skipper.
Carcharodus boeticus, Southern Marbled Skipper.
Carcharodus stauderi, False Marbled Skipper, Out of range.
Carcharodus flocciferus, Tufted Marbled Skipper, Montane.
Carcharodus orientalis, Oriental Marbled Skipper, Out of range.

Thanks for narrowing these down Malcolm. I'm still unsure to make the call, although alcea seems to fit. It seems a ventral shot is most useful with this genus. Have a look at this site which has excellent pictures and clear description of diagnostic features; still, the author himself seems to be struggling with some of his specimens!
