According to my mom's field guide(I think it's a Peterson - I have the same guide, but can't find mine) it says the Brant and the Cackling are two different species. Further it says the light bellied race(which this clearly is) is quite rare on the west coast. I'm pretty excited about this spotting - and was when I took the photos. It reminds me of the Hawaiian goose, which I'd read was also related to the canada goose family
@ Karen, this is excellent . To have caught this picture with the ring around the neck!! i am trying to sort out the Canada / Cackling goose complex. This would be in my view point an Aleutian canada/cackling goose.
