day flying moth

Description:

Orange under winged day flying moth. It wasn't until I saw the photos and the antenna that I confirmed my suspicion that this was a moth(by coloring) as it flew like a butterfly

Habitat:

Eagle lake is a high desert alkali lake in California

I might have to do that - it didn't have any aspect of catacola except the pretty colors. It wasn't until I looked at the photos that I knew for sure it was a moth and not a butterfly

This might be a Catocala species. But if you are really interested in pinpointing it, you can go to Butterflies and Moths of North America and make a submission there and if they ID it, it would be published on their site.
