Description:

A prehistoric bird endemic to the the Amazon River Basin.

Habitat:

Found nesting in low trees along oxbow lakes in the Amazon rain forest. This particular shot was taken on the Madre de Dios river in Bolivia.

Notes:

Young hoatzins have hooks on their wings, similar to the prehistoric Archaeopteryx of the late Jurassic period.

Nice spot

Sara, if your picture is identifiable you can still post it as every record counts, the more the better. We do not want to count just the very good pictures, we want to photographically document as many sightings as possible

We spotted this bird near some giant water lillies while cruising the Peruvian Amazon. They were in trees in a conservation area near the Maranon River last week. We did photograph it, and the photo matches, but our photo is no where near the quality. Thanks!
