Description:

The cardinal is a mid-sized songbird. They are sexually dimorphic, with males being a bright red color, and females showing a brown plumage with a slight red cast to it. Both have a orange, heavy bill, adapted for cracking the shell of nuts.

Natural habitat includes woodlands and shrublands. The bird is primarily a grain-eating species, although it will occasionally eat insects and berries.

Notes:

Northern cardinals can easily be attracted to urban yards by placing a feeder outside with black oil sunflower seeds.
