Euphydryas sp.
Pool near White Alder and Ragweed dominated riparian habitat.
I know that this is a checkerspot, but I don't know what species it is. It was seen at Camp Trask.
Nymphalidae, Nymphalinae, Melitaeini, Euphydryas sp. is the easy part. No it is getting tricky or even dirty ;-)
Personally I think it is not possible to get closer from only this only picture. If you have more and mostly a clear open wing shot and a ventral view one might be closer. If you look at the link above there are also several subspecies. These and the Euphydryas itself looks extremely variable. Yours looks also pretty worn, so differentiation is even more difficult. I am not sure, if your exact location might help. Several species are flying together in thesame area, whereas some other, mostly subspecies you might rule out due to your location. Personally I would go with Euphydryas sp. as scientific name as indicated above.
