Great Crested Grebe

Podiceps cristatus

Description:

This is a large and elegant water bird, about 50cm in length. The distinctive characteristics are that long white neck and summer head decorations: black crest and upper parts of neck; rust-coloured sides of head and white cheeks.

Habitat:

Very common resident bird in and around freshwater lakes in mountainous regions of French Alps and Prealps - here, on Annecy lake.
