Great black-backed gull

Larus marinus

Description:

This juvenile and several other gulls were hanging out around a shore fisherman. The gentleman told me that he often shared his catch with the birds and he had tossed quite a large fish that the juvenile was struggling to swallow. Other birds hovered around in the hopes s/he wouldn't manage but after the fish slid up and down the gullet a few times, the bird finally got it down.

Habitat:

Topsail Island shoreline

It was interesting watching the bird get it down, ForestDragon. It did not have an easy time of it but persisted until it managed to swallow the fish whole.

Wow, what a meal! That bird won't need to eat for a bit. Haha!
