Purple Polypore

Polyporus melanopus

Description:

Brownish purple flat and slightly funnel-shaped caps with eccentric short stipe growing from rotting logs. Caps were about 80-90mm wide and about 2mm thick. Centres were darkish brown to black. Flesh was a pale cream. The underside was polyporus, off-white in colour, with tightly arranged pores giving it a smooth texture.

Habitat:

damp eucalyptus forest. There were wattle and southern beech trees in the forest.
