African humming bird moth

Macroglossum trochilus

Description:

Moth that feeds during daytime flew into the house by accident. Captured it to take some photos and released it again. Normally it is very very difficult to get photos since it is very busy and fast. Last photo not so good, but it gives an idea of the underside.

Habitat:

Mostly the eastern coast down to Cape Town in South Africa.

That's for sure. I've been trying to get photos or a video of this one for a while, but it is just too fast.

I am trying to upload a pic of one from North Carolina; from the way it hovered I would have sworn it was an actual hummingbird!

I can assure you it flies like a fighter jet with amazing hover capabilities and Target spotting extraordinaire!
