Melozone crissalis
The California Towhee's coloring is dull brown overall with light rust undertail coverts and buff or rust colored streaks at the throat. There is little sexual dimorphism. It is around 20–25 cm in length, and has a noticeably long tail. Its appearance suggests a large, plain sparrow.
This spotting was seen in the Anstine-Audubon Nature Preserve http://www.sandiegoaudubon.org/anstine-n... which is in the Coastal Sage/Scrub and Chaparral biomes.
California Towhees have a call that sounds like an un-oiled door squeaking.

Wow! That must have been a fun filled afternoon!!
Thanks so much Emma; I'm honored to be a Ranger. Coincidentally to Cindy and I becoming Rangers, we met (for the first time) for an afternoon of nature walking and photography at the local Audubon sanctuary. See her spottings because she's a better photographer with a way bigger lens!
Congratulations Ava for becoming a Ranger.
Thanks for introducing me to the world of Toyon Berries and Cedar Waxwings. i am indebted to you for that.
nice spotting. They look so different from Eastern towhees
