Hooded Merganser

Description:

The hooded merganser is a sleek black and white bird that has rusty brown sides. Crest "hood" raises to reveal a large white patch. Long thin black bill. The female is a sleek brown and rust bird with a ragged rusty crest and long-thin brown bill.

Habitat:

These hooded mergansers were surprise visitors at a pond I visit frequently at Kinder Farm Park in Millersville, Maryland.
