Brownish bird that built nest in ledge on veranda. Appears to be insectivorous, all brownish on head, no eye ring.
my porch
My guess is a small thrush, as I have seen one hanging about the yard, but haven't seen much in the way of flycatchers. She managed this during a week of rain when we were either in the house or at work

Having done research into their songs, I find we have a large number of them around our house. So that's definitive, I think
Unusual spot for a thrush nest, but not altogether impossible. I can see the bird as a Swainson's, they breed along the northwestern slope.
I got a suggestion of Swainson's Thrush from an on-line birding group. I was thinking we didn't have them here, but I guess we do.
I have heard western tanagers calling constantly, but haven't seen ANY this year, so I would consider that, even though she seems more olive-brown-drab than yellow drab. I was also thinking phoebe from the nest shape, although I can safely rule out our common western black. As for say's, I just listened to the call on cornell-labs and can safely say I've never heard it here, nor have I seen one. And we're in the middle of a fir forest and there isn't much open land about.
Although there is the possibility of willow flycatcher, but I"m not seeing an eye ring. It's too big for a kinglet and too unmarked for the wren who was poking about.
However, with a Hermit thrush cruising my yard near the house, I'm thinking that is still the best possibility. At least until the eggs hatch and the parents start feeding babies in view of us and we get a much better look. I might bring a ladder over in a week when no one is on the nest and have a peek at eggs if I can.
Looks almost like the Summer Tanagers nesting in my yard, though you would have the Western Tanager. The nest doesn't look to be in the right location, though. The nest material and structure greatly resembles a phoebe nest. Maybe a Say's.
