Alkali flies

Ephydra hians

Description:

..And what are all these birds in Mono Lake eating?.. here's one thing: Alkali Flies! These flies are quite remarkable in many senses: To just pick one out several interesting facts and one I could see with my own eyes: these flies can go in and out underwater! Yes, this is because tiny hairs trap a thin layer of air which allows the fly to "scuba dive." Their name also raises from the fact that they live in particularly salty habitats. They are a primordial food source for all the birdies in this and alike lakes, ponds and salines. In the last pic there is what I think are their larvae or pupae.

Habitat:

Mono Lake, CA.

Thanks Hema and DrNamgyal!
Yes, they are very abundant in the shorelines of the lake. Luckily they don´t bite :-)
