Jack-o-Lantern mushroom

Omphalotus illudens

Description:

The Jack-0-lantern mushroom grows in eastern North America and Canada. Spotted it growing on a tree root. The Jack-o'-lantern is poisonous, causing severe gastrointestinal upset that can last for 2 days. The yellow-orange dry, solid, smooth, curved stalk is 3-8 inches long, 3/8 to 5/8 inches thick, tapering toward the blackish base. This decomposer grows clustered on or around deciduous stumps or buried wood, often in spectacularly large quantities.

Habitat:

This mushroom was spotted on a leave-covered path at Crooked River State Park, St Marys, Georgia.

Thank you RandyL for correcting this spotting. This mushroom had a stinky smell to it so just assumed it was a stinkhorn. Thank you so much!

There are no species of stinkhorns that have gills.
