Flower feeding horse fly

Scaptia auriflua

Description:

A rainy day seems to encourage small critters to stay put even with a camera in their face. This one always vanished quickly on previous encounters. About 15mm long. Sitting on Queen Anne's lace (Daucus carota) This species is a flower feeder only unlike many of it's cousins with the females drawing blood.

Habitat:

In a local nature reserve. Glenfern valley reserve.

Notes:

family: TABANIDAE
subfamily: Pangoniinae
tribe: Scionini
