A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Melanerpes uropygialis
the Gila woodpecker is a common woodpecker in Arizona, often mistaken by the Gilded flicker, the Gila woodpecker has red on the top of its head, a black bill, a brown nape, belly, and part of its crown, its back is black and white, and the two colors seem to form a crooked ladder on its back, and it has roughly those same colors, and patterns on its tail.
These birds can be found in trees, cacti, seed feeders, suet feeders, on the ground, and simply flying in the air. This one was found in tree, next to a golf course, in Anthem, Arizona.
Sometimes these birds will stick there bills out of the cactus, as you see in the photo above.
