Description:

Tiny cups smooth internally, slightly serated at margin, about 10mm diam. grey to pale grey walls, dark grey to black peridioles, furry brown to gold and cylindrical when young with paler epiphragm.

Habitat:

These ones growing in very mixed woodchip mulch on suburban nature strip.

Notes:

A 'Birds nest fungus'. This species is known to grow particularly on dung. It is also non-native to Australia but seems to be naturalised. Appearance is quite different from C.novaezelandiae.

It seems the splash method of spore dispersal is working. Great to see a new species, even if it is introduced.

I had not seen them as eyes arlanda. You are right - maybe some kind of furry snail or crab underground. 8-)

nice to see a different kind of bird's nest fungus - they look like flattened lead shots, very metallic- good spotting !
