Geopelia striata
For a pigeon this is a very delicate looking and mannered bird, growing to just over 20cm. Lavender and blue/grey in colour, white belly, smokey blue and lavender grey darker markings on edges of upper body and wing and tail feathers, pale blue colour on face, male and female similar. Preferred diet is seeds.
Found in much of eastern, northern, north-west and south-east of Australia in forest and woodland, along sides of roads where it collects the grass seeds that grow there, in gardens and parks, and close to waterholes as their 'seedy' diet conjures up a thirst. Call is a soft coo-coo and soft gentle tones.
