Crinoid Shrimp

Periclimenes cf. amboinensis

Notes:

This wonderfully-camouflaged crustacean was on a feather star whose color pattern it matched perfectly. Crinoid shrimp can change their body's colors in order to match their hosts'. This was at a depth of around 14m at Dayang Beach, Talikud Island, Philippines.

Thanks, Laura! I know - I'll just leave it at Periclimenes cf. amboinensis for now. ;)

Wonderful underwater photography as always, Blogie! This is a hard one to ID, I think I might lean more towards P.amboinensis because of the shape of the mouth parts, but it's so hard to tell with these little shrimps since they can come in so many colours! The crinoid itself is stunning too! Great find :)

As for me, I really don't know. But there are other rangers who could give you a more definite answer. Try asking them.

So how can we tell the two species apart? How can we be sure that this crinoid shrimp is one and not the other...?

They do look similar. Take a look here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/indra_swari...

Thanks for that, Jolly. But are you very sure this is P. amboinensis? It looks awfully like P. cornutus too...
