Sri Lankan junglefowl

Gallus lafayettii

Description:

Feathers are coppery orange with golden streaks. However, the abdomen, sides and tail are a dark metallic blackish-purple. Two red lappets hanging from the throat . The fleshy red comb has a yellow patch in the middle.

Habitat:

We were driving down the highway when this bird appeared out of teh fringe vegetation and began to forage very close to the edge of the highway. I got the driver to roll down his widow and clicked over his shoulder. We were on the other side of the road but our stopping did not faze the bird and it did not seem to mind automobiles whizzing past inches from its face.

Notes:

The National bird of Sri Lanka.
