American oystercatcher

Haematopus palliates

Description:

The shorebird is marked by a black and white body with a long, thick orange beak which it uses to pry open bivalve molluscs. It is about 19 inches (42 – 52 cm) in length. In the USA, the species is not protected under the Endangered Species Act. However, oystercatchers are listed as a species of concern in several states because of low and declining populations, and threats to coastal habitats, including development and recreational use of nesting beaches.

Habitat:

Atlantic Ocean shore
