Ironweed borer moth

Description:

The genus Papaipema includes more than 40 species in North America, most with strong patterns on the forewings. Their larvae tunnel in the stems of roots and various plants. The ironweed borer moth is common in the east, and its larvae feed on ironweed. (information from "Kaufman Field Guide to Insects of North America")
