White-marked Tussock Moth

Orgyia leucostigma

Description:

Caterpillar with bright red head, black stripe with a yellow stripe on each side. Four tufts of hair on back and long lashes on either side of head and one "tail". May cause allergic reaction if handled.

Habitat:

Four Mile Creek State Park, New York. Campground. Found walking on one of our tents.

Notes:

Our tents were pitched under a Black Locust tree, one of the known foodplants of this species. We had a couple of rainstorms which seemed to have knocked some of the inhabitants out of the tree and on to our tents.
