Great Blue Heron

Ardea herodias

Description:

A Great Blue Heron flying in, landing on a dock and jumping down to the beach to check out a fish on shore

Habitat:

In the air, on the beach, in trees and reed beds all around Lake Blanche in Minnesota. This lake butts up to Glendalough State Park, designated a Waterfowl Sanctuary and is within a seven mile radius of wetlands, woodlands, farmlands, prairie fields and the Otter Tail River

Notes:

This Great Blue Heron did not appear to be overly concerned with us as it flew in over our boat, landed on a dock and preceded to walk and jump its way to shore to check out a fish lying on the shoreline. Half of our lake is undeveloped and is attached to a state park, designated a Waterfowl Sanctuary. As such the motorized boats and jet skies aren't as numerous as you might find on other lakes and the waterfowl and birds are quite varied and numerous at times (early May through the end of August).
