The red-shafted northern flicker resides in western North America. They are in the woodpecker family. They are red under the tail and underwings and have red shafts on their primaries. They have a beige cap and a grey face. Males have a red mustache. There are two species of the Northern flicker. This is the western red-shafted and the eastern species is the yellow-shafted. Northern flickers are ground eaters. Their favorite food is ants.
In the western United States, one can find them in mountain forests all the way up to treeline. This red-shafted flicker was spotted in a campground in Buffalo, Wyoming
