Philippine pygmy woodpecker

Yungipicus maculatus

Description:

This Philippine pygmy woodpecker was spotted pecking a hole in a Mahogany Tree in our backyard. According to Wikipedia this bird is endemic to the Philippines. Wiki also points out that there is some disagreement, in Ornithology, concerning its taxonomy. "Some taxonomic authorities continue to place this species in the genus Dendrocopos or Picoides." Wikipedia.

Habitat:

Spotted in our backyard on a Mahogany Tree [Swietenia mahogani (L.) Jacq.]. This tree does not appear to have a local name i n the Philippines. This might be because is not a native tree and has been introduced fairly recently. Plant information - http://www.stuartxchange.org/Mahogany.ht......

Notes:

There are really good photos of this bird in https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/11...
