Whitespot Giant Arum

Amorphophallus paeoniifolius

Description:

Also known as elephant foot yam, this is a food crop from Southeast Asia, flower has a foul smell to attract its fly pollinators

Habitat:

savanna/forest edge

Notes:

I left Baluran national park on Christmas day, to go back to the city but before I left, I checked out a trail I had not yet seen. Within a few minutes I had spotted a number of Amorphophallus blooms. I had been seeing the vegetative growth form of the plant throughout the park during the 4 days I spent there, but never the flower, until now. Being a horticulturist, seeing an Amorphophallus in bloom was about the best Christmas gift I could receive.
