White-tailed bumblebee

Bombus sp.

Description:

In Sweden there are about 40 species of bumblebees. There are three species that are very similar too eachother and to my spotting, and those are; Bombus lucorum, Bombus magnus and Bombus cryptarum. (All with while tails and similar placements of the yellow markings). The most common one are Bombus lucorum.

Habitat:

A "Dog Rose" bush (Rosa rugosa), urban env.

Notes:

It is only the queen bumblebee that hibernates in Sweden. The first warmth of spring awakens the queen and she will immediately begin searching for a suitable place to nest, such as abandoned sorkbon, tufts of grass, airy moss, natural cavities between rocks and hollow trees. You can also find humlebon in cavities in walls, under brädhögar and birdhouses. Some bumblebees has its own heat production which allows them to live in Arctic regions. A good bumblebee can on a flight pollinate about 400 flowers. The length of the Bumblebees tongue determines the flower of choice. Flower design and color is less important.
