Stagonopleura guttata
An Australian finch, distinctive black, white and red colouring, red beak, red eyes, red rump, white belly, white spots on black on sides, black upper chest, grey head, buff grey wings/back, black face line from beak to eye. One of Australia's smallest finches. The species is considered vulnerable in NSW. Much of its essential habitat is vastly diminished and introduced predators such as cats impact greatly. Feeds on seeds, fruits, insects.
Found in woodlands with grassy understorey, mallee country, farmlands, open grasslands, edges of woodlands and cleared areas in eastern Australia. This one in high country woodland near gardens in south east Queensland.
I hope to get better pictures one day of these beautiful little birds. The three birds together at this time were very nervous, unfortunately domestic cats in the area have since killed them so I was lucky to have seen them at all.

Your kind comments are much appreciated Neil. Maybe too many cats around Brisbane? Head out west just a little and you might see the spotted pardalotes quite active, they are nesting at present. You might also see near you some Red Browed Finches. I haven't seen the Diamond Firetails since I took these photos, but found feathers from other birds and cat scats an evidence throughout the property so assume they have fallen prey to cats unfortunately.
How lovely is this?!! I don't get to see any of the finch species in Brisbane, or perhaps I haven't been looking hard enough. Nice spotting, kd, and great info. PS: Picture quality is good enough for me to know I love this little fellow.
Thanks Reza. Not the clearest of photos...they don't stay still for long, but hope to see more this season.
Beauty !
Thanks KarenPuracan.
Wow! Beautiful!
