Scarlet Robin (male)

Petroica boodang

Description:

Grows to almost 14cm (including tail), short bird with larger head for body size, males white, red and black with distinctive white 'spotlight' on forehead, short pointed beak, females white, brown with dusting of salmon pink on chest. Feeds on insects and spiders. An active species, mostly stays within a home range, but some are known to migrate short distances according the climatic/seasonal changes.

Habitat:

Found throughout south east and south west Australia and Tasmania. This one in high country woodland adjacent to garden stopping for a rest on a fence.

Notes:

As noticed with most small birds, the cooler winter weather brings them closer to the ground to feed, which makes photographing them much easier.
