Jacky Winter

Microeca fascinans

Description:

About 60mm long. Grey-brown on back, creamy white breast and underparts, a short fine bill, a distinguishing fine black mark through the eyes, scrawny bare black legs.

Habitat:

This one was in a church graveyard in a tiny country town surrounded by farmlands and national park.

Notes:

Also called 'Postsitter' because of it's habit of perching on poles and other pedestals scanning the area for insects. Other names include Postboy, White-tail, Peter-Peter, Brown Flycatcher. It is not very closely related to the 'Flycatcher' group although it looks and behaves similarly. Conditions were extremely cold so the name Jacky Winter is appropriate here.
