Painted Jezebel

Delias hyparete luzonensis

Description:

The Painted Jezebel, Delias hyparete (Pieridae; Pierinae), is one of the best known and most diverse species of Delias. It has the largest distribution area and is common in most of its forms. Delias hyparete luzonensis is the ssp occurring in Luzon. Its recorded hostplants are Dendropthoe pentandra, Macrosolon cochinchinensis (Loranthaceae). Upperside, the wings are white with veins black-dusted towards the outer margins. The female has its veins more heavily black-dusted than the male. Underside, the wings are white with black-dusted veins. In the hindwing, the basal half is bright yellow and the marginal border is bright red or orange-red. Most forms have the red or orange-red submarginal spots, though some have these replaced with yellow. The number of these spots also vary considerably.
