Promethea Moths

Callosamia promethea

Description:

Family: Saturniidae, Subfamily: Saturniinae. Male and Female (Sexually dimorphic). Male - Dorsal color is black with cream-colored bands. Ventral color is very dark red. Abdomen is dark red and white. Female has reddish-brown wings with wavy white PM line. Female abdomen is red and white. Wingspan: 7.5 -9.5 cm).

Habitat:

woodlands. Will come to light.

Notes:

I found a number of Promethea Moth cocoons in the woods. Two emerged on the same day at almost the same time (although I didn't witness the emerging). They were drying their wet wings. Male and female. And they mated. I saw the female make the move toward him which surprised me.
