Description:

Spotting # 11,000.
This is an extremely rare and now endemic Iberian species, there being only about 300 in total, mostly in Spain, with 3 pairs in Portugal. A few cross the Strait of Gibraltar to Morocco each year but there have been no breeding records there for many years.
This one appeared when a Booted Eagle triumphantly carried up a rabbit which it had caught and attracted the attention of all the raptors in the area. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/438... Rabbits are one of its favourite foods.
This is the first time I have seen and photographed one of these magnificent birds which makes the Kestrel in picture 2 look more like a sparrow. It came very close to me and it is on occasions like this that I wish I could afford a better camera.

Habitat:

Lower slopes of mountain at 1,000 metres ASL.
