Northern Flicker

Colaptes auratus

Description:

This bird was foraging on the road in front of my vehicle when a jogger ran by and flushed it. Luckily, the bird flew to a tree about 20 feet from me and right outside my passenger side window. I added a touch of flash due to the dark shade of the forest. Thanks goes to the jogger!

Habitat:

Forests as well as grasslands. The bird can be seen on the ground as often as it is seen in trees.
