Spiny black spider

Phoroncidia lygeana

Description:

An easily recognized species - Phoroncidia lygeana. It's black body is equipped with spines / thorns (6 of them) for defence. Female, body 5mm in length. The eyes are protruding. It is very active and makes photography tough. With a closer observation, I could see some transparent bumps on it's abdomen. This species is recorded not to build webs.

Habitat:

Foliage of understory of forest in Poring Hot Springs, Ranau, Sabah, Malaysia.

Notes:

>>>Map accuracy : 1km radius. This is another bizarre animal I found in the forest of Ranau Hot Springs. Similar spider found in Cameron Highlands in http://www.flickr.com/photos/labah-labah...
