Microcarbo africanus
Also known as the Long-tailed Cormorant, this is a medium sized bird but a small cormorant, growing up to approximately 50 to 60 cm tall. Dark glossy green with some silvery scales on wings; long tail and black legs. It sports a crest, yellow bill, white chin and red-eye.
This cormorant is an African resident and breeder, and widespread all over sub-Saharan Africa in freshwater and wetlands. Here, observed in reed vegetation close to shores of lake Awasa (outskirts of Awasa township); in the area designed as a park/protected area; very rich in wildlife in general, and birdlife in particular.
This member of the cormorant family (Phalacrocoracidae), is also known as Phalacrocorax africanus, Plotus nanus or Anhinga nana.
