Sandhill Crane

Grus canadensis (pratensis?)

Description:

These cranes are absolutely beautiful! Written descriptions of their coloring does not prepare one for the riot of colors along their feathers or for how clearly each is defined. These patient birds allowed for many photographs to be taken. Assumed Grus canadensis pratensis by location.

Habitat:

Spotted pond-side on a local college campus. Meadows, grasslands, and wetlands.

Notes:

The Sandhill Crane is protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act in the USA. http://www.fws.gov/migratorybirds/Regula... http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Sandh...
