Thanks Carol, Christine and James. I think James has it, looks just like a previous spotting of mine.
Hi there! Sorry I'm taking so long replying - I was out. I did misspeak when I wrote "family". I actually thought that the spider might belong to the genus Oxyopes. I had not heard of the Hamadruas genus. (It only contains 9 species!) Correct taxonomy is "Genus sp." ("sp." shouldn't be italicized, but Noah will automatically.)
The spider above does resemble several Oxyopes, and so I thought it might fit into that genus. I knew it was not a Hamataliwa and not a Peucetia (the two other more common varieties). The reason I included the family link before was because I thought it might be a decent starting point for further searches. I knew it included genera links.
Dan looks like the one you posted April 3rd 2014 http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/224...
Ashley, I was thinking maybe Christine mixed up family and genus and perhaps she added the link to the Oxyoidae family because on wiki, there is no real page for the genus Oxyopes, but only she knows for sure.
It is actually very incorrect to use the family name followed by "sp." since species does not follow a family name, genus does. You provided the genus in your suggestion of "Oxyopes sp.", but gave a link to the family Oxyopidae. So are you trying to say it's in the genus Oxyopes or in the family Oxyopidae?
Many insects and arachnids require a microscopic examination to get a species-specific identification. It's correct practice to use the family name followed by "sp." if you know the family but don't know the species. Hope that helps!
