Wintergreen (Gaultheria Procumbens) of Maine
I would like evidence of where wintergreen occurs in Maine. Particularly if it has been found north of Millinocket. I am interested in seeing how far north it is found. I am also wondering if it grows above the 46 latitude in any other states or Canada.

Wintergreen aka teaberry, checkerberry, winterberry grows in acidic soil. It is a low growing plant with thick dark green leaves. In the summer it has small bell shaped white flowers. In the fall and winter it develops small red berries that are white on the inside. The berries are edible. The leaves are also edible. They can be chewed and have a strong minty flavor. The leaves can also be used as a pain reliever.
