The land on which the UFM campus is located is a remnant of the pine and evergreen oak forest which once covered the area of what is today Guatemala City. Besides conserving the forest, other areas have been landscaped using native and exotic plants. Its objective is to locate, collect, and conserve plants of primary interest. Forest remnants, such as that of the UFM, are a source of germ plasm, and habitats for birds, insects, reptiles, and mammals.
