Incredible Insects ⎜Introductory Entomology Online Course

Incredible Insects ⎜Introductory Entomology Online Course

Take photographs of the insects you observe around you and note specifics in regards to the location where each was observed. The insects should be identifiable in the photograph (i.e. not blurry) and the emphasis should be on the insect (crop out unnecessary distractions). Use the dichotomous key provided in the course materials to identify the insect order name. Use an insect field guide to assist you with common names, if you can. You may choose to check one out from the public library or use an online field guide. Be sure to ask around…many people such as parents or grandparents may know some of the insects by their common names.

This mission is designed for the participants in the Introductory Entomology online course I am teaching. As a culminating project, the participants are asked to "collect" 20 insects. Many choose to photograph the insects and thus the intent of this mission is to provide an option for sharing their collection with the other participants. This culminating project is designed so students will develop an appreciation for the diversity of insects in their local area as well as globally. In addition, it students will understand how the structure of an object (insect body parts) is related to its use or function.
